Why We Need a Savior

16 05 2008

Life is full of uncertainty.  We often feel like we have control over our lives, but we don’t.  Our time here on earth is so short.  It’s not until we experience something like 9/11, Katrina, Tsunami or any other major event (personal, national or global) that we realize how frail we are, how vulnerable.  I became more conscious of this today after reading the headlines on Yahoo news.  In Juyuan, China there was a massive earthquake that took the lives of thousands.  The part that hit me the hardest was the following quote.  “Our grief is incomparable,” said Li Ping, 39, eyes rimmed red, as he and his wife slowly, carefully pulled a pair of pink pajamas over the bruised, naked body of their 8-year-old daughter, Ke. “We got married late, and had a child late. She is our only child.”  You know why it hit me?  Because I put myself in their shoes.  It made me think, “What if that were Jocelyn or Josephine”?  How would I react?  How would I continue on?  It made me think, how do these people begin the healing and rebuilding process?  Where will they find their strength.

It made me think about the generous gift God gave us when He send His son Jesus.  He willingly sent his son to die so that we might have life.  Amazing isn’t it?  God can relate to the loss of an only child.  Jesus while on earth experienced the loss of close friends, sorrow, physical, spiritual and emotional torment, and just about every other feeling we experience. He went beyond that though, He gave his life on the cross, sacrificed himself for us so that we might have life, hope, peace and a bright future.  This doesn’t take away the tragedy of life, but gives us hope and strength knowing God understands what we are going through, period.  He knows how many tears have fallen off your cheek (and catches them in his palm), he knows how many hairs are on your head.  He cares about us, big time, just look at what he did on the cross.

Are we disconnected?  Do we think we are immune?  Try putting yourself in “their” shoes.  You never know when you might get caught unexpectedly in an earthquake or a pileup on the freeway or unexpected health issues that pretty much alter your outlook on life. Life can change in an instant for good or bad.  Jesus is here for you, hand extended, He will walk through whatever you have to walk through.  He will lift you out of the mire.  That’s why we need a Savior.  That’s why I love my Savior.  Thanks Jesus for lifting me out. Lord, please comfort those poor souls in China, lift them out of the mire.  They need a Savior.  Zephania 3:17 says “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save.”
